Last current event quiz

1.The conflict involving historical preservation between the Labay family and the old west austin neighborhood association was that west austin is tied up in what could be the endgame of a 16-year fight over an eyesore of a vacant old house a few blocks south of the store. I believe that the labay family has a better case, in the way that they would like to destroy the house because of its health issues and its safety issues. The compromise that is being proposed would include subdividing the lot to preserve the home while allowing development on the other portion of the house. I believe that this compromise is good because that would then leave everyone involved happy, including others not involved.
2. On Tuesday UT, and A&M will compete for the contract to operate one of the nation’s nuclear weapons labs. The other people that they are partnering with is the Boeing, Battelle institute in Sandia nuclear effort. In this new task the UT and A&M student would provide research expertise, workforce training and independent peer review of the work done at sandia. The students would also add perspective to the task. I think that this proposal is a very good opportunity for the students to work together, but then again I believe that it could be very dangerous. Maybe this isn’t such a good idea for the universities to support because of the level of safety and possible drama between the students.
3.The latest news on Cosby's story is that he drugged and sexually assaulted a woman whom he once mentored, with this ruling the case will move forward. Cosby's lawyer that the former district attorney promised never to prosecute Cosby as a way to introduce him to testify in the civil suit brought by con-stand, which was settled. These might be that lamest arguments I have ever seen. I think that this story is in the right spot when it comes to being on the front page. Many women were hurt and they need justice, along with justice the community also needs to know what has happened. Many people know about this story and most people want to know about it including women.
4.The school will now be named Russell Lee instead of Robert E. Lee. Russell Lee was a photographer and also lived in the lee neighborhood. A lot of his work is actually at UT. This name was chosen because most people didn’t like the name in the first place, and the compromise that was made in order to keep the “Lee” title wads to choose someone who also had the last name Lee. On monday it was a little bit awkward because of the fact that many thought that this really didn’t change anything. Lee elementary will always be lee no matter what their first name. I agree with this because no one really calls it robert E lee
5. One way this this horrific story could end would be with firing the baylor recruiter. This scandal is about two sexual assault charges. A woman told police and hospital people that earlier that morning she had been assaulted. The handling of this case was somehow not done correctly..This article was very unclear to me. I believe that he should be let go, this case was handled very poorly and people got hurt.

Coach Northcutt story

Ms. Northcutt is no rookie when it comes coaching. Over the years she has been a great volleyball coach, but she has recently picked up softball. Nikki Northcutt said “ Softball was so much fun, and I was thrilled to support Coach Matz in her first year as a head coach.” Coach Matz, her fellow volleyball coach was one of the main reasons why she joined softball in the first place.  Northcutt being the great coach that she is knew how to adjust to the slower pace, different skill set of softball. Northcutt said “ softball as a game is not as intense in pace as volleyball. You have to sustain your focus in times of quiet, where there is never quiet in volleyball. “ With being able to adapt so quickly Northcutt also was able to create many new memories, during the softball season “ we had a lot of injuries” Northcutt said “leaving us with only nine on each team. She wrote ‘ no subs. You’re fine.’ on the line-up clipboard. From then on, whenever a player complained, that was the reply.” Throughout the season Northcutt had tons of fun.
Along with a new commitment comes new responsibilities.  With all the weekdays and some weekends dedicated to softball Northcutt still found ways to continue her home life a before. Northcutt said “coaching is extremely demanding in terms of time and energy. Since I’m a single mom of a nine year old, Theo became our ‘bat-boy.’ He actually loved his job, but he prefers to be home with me. I also declined a million social engagements. I hope i still have friends left.” With being a coach for more than one sport you tend to learn a few things. Whether it be about a new coaching technique or something you can contribute to your home life. “ I think staying healthy is the most important thing to do to be the best coach. It is imperative that I take care of my diet, exercise, and rest in order to stay alert and positive for my team” Northcutt said “I haven’t had a great success with this, but I’m trying. Next season! I also  am passionate about being organized and communicative. I like for my players and families to know what's going on and what to expect. I’m the same way as a parent” We all know Coach Northcutt puts her best effort forward when doing anything, whether it be coaching, teaching or parenting.

But she couldn't have done it without all of the support of the family members of coaches and players, and teachers. “ The Volleyball and Softball parents have been so supportive.” Northcutt said “ We could NOT do this crazy job without all of the family support”

My Story, based on her story

Claire Caudill, she's great student at McCallum  High school  ready for the future.  Everyone teacher is great flu to have her in their class.  Its the beginning of the year and she on the freshman volleyball team. Team captain in fact. She was the MVP as many would say.  But her grades were slippingThe first 6 weeks for any new coming freshman is a challenge, and they all should deb focusing on school. But for Claire Caudill this was really hard.

Volleyball is currently her main focus. This shouldn't be the case, she should be able to focus on both school and volleyball. Her teachers want to help her my not forcing her to go to practice if she is drowned in homework. Caudill said " I love going to study hall because it helps my stress level go down." This after being given a few study hall priors Caudill was able to get her grades up and her volleyball skills as well. Both the coaches and her teachers were very happy about this given that they had a stress free student and volleyball player. " I am very happy to be playing to my full potential, while preforming well in my classes" Caudill said " its a great balance that I would love to maintain." This is a great reason for why Student Athletes should have a little break every now and then in order to be the best they can.

current event quiz

1.New details show that she was sexually assaulted and strangled. The Forensic scientist were the ones that found out all the details but remained unnamed because the investigation was still going on. This information was provided because it causes suspicion. Well this story has so much attention because she was a young girl going to college and in the city of austin.
2. Hired.com is inequity because 69% of the time men receive higher salary then women. Hired.com helps connect tech employers with job seekers and they have access to salary's and job candidates. Well this could happen because women set there salary lower them men do. I think that it was promoting hired.com way to much, when I first opened this article that's all I saw because it was in blue.
3.The governor changed the part of the law that says, you can protest if someone is discriminating against you in the work place. ACLU criticized his order, because it was bad. PayPal said it would abandon plans for local operation center in the state.
4.They have been studying the number of suicide bombers. 75% of the children used are girls, many have been assumed to be victims or perpetrators. CHILDREN ARE DYING. They don't want to use the term "suicide" attack because these children are going against there will, they aren't going out to kill them selves. Boko Haram is a terrorist group in Nigeria. a-Qaida  attacks everything while others attack easier places. The main motivation has been that there is a lot of money factor.
5.I read the story about a SUV driving into someones home, this story was about a man in a black SUV and the police were following him the whole night. K9 units would then began to search the house and they would also have helicopters looking for him. This man is trash and I don't understand why he drove into someones home.
6. This story is different because it was numbered and each paragraph is about something different. Nothing was interesting because this story sucked. I could write a better one! If the piece needed to be shorted I would just cut the whole thing out and keep the title.

My best day in sports rough draft

My best day in sports was when my Kealing middle school team beat the Lamar middle school team for the district championship in volleyball.. Earlier in the volleyball season we were undefeated, until we played the Lamar Scotties. It was a close game that went to a heated three sets. But sadly we lost 25-20, 23-25 and 10-15. Of course this was devastating to me because I had two best friends on the team, and no one likes loosing to there friends. When it came to the end of our 8th grade volleyball season, or the playoffs. We were matched up against lamar. The pre-game trash talk was over the top, the Lamar girls thought they had us beat from the get go. But little did they know we were back for vengeance. Before the game we all got in a close huddle feeling the nervous energy throughout. We took a few deep breaths, with our hand up in the air LADY HORNETS ON THREE, ONE... TWO... THREE, LADY HORNETS. The game began. I was first up to serve. The whistle blows. I can feel the pressure. I ace the ball, landing straight on the floor with two looking as it falls. We all jumped with excitement and thats when I knew this game was going to be a good one. With a great few rallys, Kealing will then win in the first set 25-20. All we needed to do was pull of the next set and we would be the district champs. The second set was heated and even closer then the first. The score 20-20, kealing knows that these next points are crucial. The ball is being served over from the lamar side, everyones low and ready to pass it up. But it goes straight into the net. We all cheer. We then went on to get Kill after kill winning 25-21. We were all ecstatic to have won, we run in the middle of the court to have a huge group hug. After shaking the Lamar girls hands, we got to hold the district champs plaque. When I grabbed that plaque I felt a rush go over me, in the way that I knew when you try your best good things come out of it.  And that was my best day in sports.

Current Event Quiz

1. According to the Austin Police department, the shooting last month is now a finished case. Most of these cases spend a very long time before they go through the system but this one went through in less then a month. The three options would be to schedule a disciplinary hearing, request for further investigation or see if he has had any other policy violations. To make this go public they have to be suspended for 1 day at least.
2. They are all rushing to become US citizens so that they can vote against trump in the election. The larger trend is latino immigrants becoming citizens in order to vote against trump. Obama has made it easier by making the fee to come into america payable by credit card.I think that donald trump would be very mad. " Those people can't make a difference".
3.They are struggling because they don't have enough money because of the decrease in oil prices. Commission leaders tell conservatives that the federal government will be forced to take over.
4. Lady nancy Reagan died so this is why obama ordered all flags to be raised half-staffed. Michelle Obama will be at the funeral on friday. Reagan meant a lot to her husband so therefore the current first lady must attend the funeral. Nancy will be remembered for her work ethic and for working at the Reagan Presidential Library for the past 15 years.
5. The jury finding was the stalker was filming her nude. Andrews parents felt terror and fear. The stalker was found guilty and the companies that own the hotel, the stalker will pay 51% and the two companies will pay the remaining 49%. I do think that this was distributed evenly.
6. The supreme court announced that you now can and have to let same sex marriage with an adopted kid if the cross state lines. This is called the "faith and good credit". The Alabama action was that a women was denied to see her kid that she adopted. Some points that the judges didn't put into consideration because they had already made up their minds were the arguments of the case.

Rolling Stones Part 2

1. The rolling stone journalist didn't fake check very well and some things weren't attributed correctly.
2.When writing a story journalist should always fact check to make sure your story is the best it can be.
3.When writing a story you defiantly should fake check as you are writing the story along with checking it after you write it more then 1 time. Whether it be something someone said or something you said.
4. I think that this story was more about the editors and journalist wanting it to be right more then them actually checking it and changing it to make it possible a less sting piece.

Rolling stones

I thought that this article was very good. I think that this was the best story we have read out loud all year. This story did a great job of raising awareness of sexual assault on college campuses. Throughout the whole story you hear of a few personal experiences of sexual assault that went un reported or didn't go farther then being brought up. I am sure this made many people mad and that they wanted to do something about it. This story is very well reported because it is very detailed and has a lot of good quotes. This was very interesting and I enjoyed reading it.

BAD PEOPLE

In 2011 Johann Hari was suspended from The Independent after charges of plagiarism. His plagiarism was mainly through the acts of unattributed quotations in the interviews, by using previously posted quotes in place of the person he interviewed answers. In 2008 he won the Orwell Prize for a piece that he had written previously. This story was later fact checked with his other stories, THE GUARDIAN, THE TELEGRAPH, AND THE WASHINGTON POST.  This prize was later taken away from Johann Hari. Though he stood by the article that won the prize he would end up giving it back because he felt bad. Well Johann only made up some quotes where Glass made up everything.

Well this film changed my perspective on journalism in the way that I never thought your fact checking could come from notes and that someone would go that far to get a good story.

SGlass

1. This could have offered a clue to why he's a bad journalist because he most likely made this up. You could easily make up an interview and pretend you are a psychologist. When fake checking sometimes you have to look at your notes because the facts aren't anywhere else. He could have made these notes up so that his story could be fact checked right.
2. This could be a clue that he is a bad journalist because your editor should always stand up to you and that he can get away with everything. They should always have your back knowing whats going to happen next. Knowing that you will have someone on your side will make it that much easier to make up a story.
3. Knowing that glass will do anything to make his parents or anyone happy means that he would even lie. Clearly peoples happiness is very important to him and his parents could have been the start to a lying streak. All he does is lie and it seems to make others happy.  I am sure his parents are proud and maybe thats why he continued.
4. When he offers to resign about a minor detail maybe he is starting to think that they are getting on to him. And that he should quit before they find another things he's lied about.  This could have been his first attempt to cover his tracks. Glass might be thinking about how much he's messed up.
5. Glass is trying to be the tough guy. When he is yelling at the intern that oohing slides he is trying to show that he thinks it wrong. If people think hat he believes its the wrong thing to do then they will think that he would never do something like that. This would therefore gives him some trusty friends.

JAKE

This demonstrates a good sports story because it has a lot of small details that make the story more interesting. When reading a story the small details count, it could change the view of the whole story. This story also has conflict which is essential for a sports piece. Many times sports stories all sound the same but if you add in a conflict it can change the whole story to make it more intersting for the sports fans, and everyone else. Along the lines of making the story more interesting you have to use a different angle then others. This story did a great job of doing this. Jake has been out of the game for a while and this interview/story really captured him perfectly. And of course this story had a main character so it did a great job at that. A voice is also needed and I felt in this story it was the interviewer.

Feature

"Everyday is different" Wendi Caudill says after a long day at work. It all starts with the buzzing sound of the 6 o'clock alarm she has set on her phone. The dogs going nuts just to get fed. 1 cup Marvin ;the brown black mutt, 1 cup for Hershey; the chocolate lab. The life of an AISD nutritionist is no easy task. Looking the part is a huge portion of the job. A few minutes. That's all it takes to transform from single mom to a nutritionist of AISD. Somewhere around 7 she's gone. A coffee in her hand followed by a new application of her favorite lipgloss, marks the start to a new day.

She goes into the office, saying a peppy" good morning"  to everyone next to her cube. She never forgets to say hello to her boss. Well she is the one that signs her paychecks. "The mornings are the worst" Wendi says. School after school call in to complain about staff absents, or how the kitchen doesn't have any power and they need assistance. "I am a problem solver" I don't know what my schools would do without me. Paper work after paper work, it's now lunch time.

Rush hour. Students start to pile in, this is when she knows it's time for a new application of lipgloss. School after school she makes sure they are all serving students and getting everyone what they need. A call come in from another school, it's the principle, asking her if she could help with a parent problem. Of course she goes and helps. I mean she is a problem solver. Every parent has something different to complain about, whether it be the food on the line or how we aren't green enough. After the evening is done its time to go back and repeat the morning.

The same problems and or issues seem to pop up again and create more chaos. The same parents the same principles and the same co-workers. "coming home is the best part of my day" wendi says but sometimes she comes home to more chaos with 3 teenage children, who have also all been had at work. Or school. The next hour consist of folding clothes and putting something together for dinner. Soon she goes to bed and her kids follow and the cycle repeats again the next day.

The Mourning Anchor

Yes this is a great piece of journalism.
Bryant Gumbel seems like a tool. He was very much so attached to work and his dead dad. Which isn't a bad thing but he didn't pay attention to his ALIVE mother.
I think that this story is very balance because it has everything his does with work and his personal, which isn't very much.
Most everything in this story to me was a signature because everything they wrote about was to show his not very bright character.
I don't think Bryant Gumbel liked this story very much because maybe he thinks that it didn't show his full personality or all sides of him. I think that his family thought it captured him perfectly! Because this is how they see him.
The purpose of this story is to show that there are many sides to a person and all must be explored.
Well this article made me feel better about myself an d how I act toward family members. But for others this could shine light on a problem they didn't know they had.
I believe that Reilly had an obligation to write the story like this because it shows who he actually is apposed to the Bryant Gumbel everyone sees on tv.

SPORTS!!!!!!!;;;;;;;;;;;;;))))))))))))):::::::::(((((((

Sport profiles are not as easy as they look. within a sports profile you must have some sort of conflict or your story won't be very intreging.  Just writing a plan sports story isn't very interesting, you need to find a way to makes readers more interested you have to consider different angles.  Each story has to have some sort of character or "team" is a sports story that takes place somewhere these details are very important and shouldn't be forgotten. Almost all stories have a tone or voice, voice would include quotes from others to make the story more real or an overall feel.  Why would you write about this certain subject? Something has to be coming out of what you are writing such as how it affects the bigger picture. You also need to makes sure you don't leave anything out, details are important.

Last summer, in the dead of night, three peace activists penetrated the exterior of Y-12 in Tennessee, supposedly one of the most secure nuclear-weapons facilities in the United States. A drifter, an 82-year-old nun and a house painter. They face trial next week on charges that fall under the sabotage section of the U.S. criminal code. And if they had been terrorists armed with explosives, intent on mass destruction? That nightmare scenario underlies the government’s response to the intrusion. Austin, Texas is the place to be" Caudill said. She loved her home, she met her true love. And "sister" there.

Caudill and Audrey Sayer were happily married to Justin Bieber. This would make them sister wives. Both not complining " you can't change who you fall in love with" Bieber says. They soon both became very popular considering that they were married to a super star and or pop sensation Bieber.  The media was booming, everyday the magazines were filled with gorgeous pictures of Sayer, Caudil and Bieber together. This is what sparked the great idea of a Tv show. " Double trouble, thats what we are" Caudill says " we are hard to handle but you know that its all for love". On a summer the  afternoon of June 6th, 2029 the sisters show came out capturing there magical lifestyle.

Her death was a story to be remembered. Justin loved them both oh so dearly. "they were both so lovely and beautiful" Bieber says "but I was the one at fault, I wasn't very loyal, I had a younger women on the side who kept me company when the girls would go out of town for, red carpets, book signings or anything of that nature. It was valentines day and I wanted to show my love to the women I was seeing on the side, I assumed that my girls Caudill and Sayer thought I was giving gifts to the other instead of them". Sayer and Caudill had beaten each other brutally. Bieber came back and was shocked about what he saw. " the loves of my life were laying on the group surrounded by there own blood" Bieber says " its not something you can just forget, my life has been changed forever, I will never stop loving them even though they are gone."

These were good feature stories its just that was called " Dies the victim, dies the city" had a lot of information and many details so it got very boring towards the end while the other was very interesting through out.  I enjoyed It's An Honor better, Because it was very well written and it  was very interesting and I could tie it to my life.

current event quiz warm up

1. The results of the Iowa debate was that Ted Cruz won and Donald trump. These outcomes were caused by carful wording, they all basically tied so it came down to there basic fundamentals. The next thing the candidates do it to take a trip to new hampsire. I think that the outcomes will be much lie the ones that just accord. So in other words very close.

LEADS MIDDLES ENDS

This assignment was all about how to write a bomb AF story
LEADS- A lot of people like to start a piece of writing with a story or a summery of what the who piece will be about. They also start with some basic information to get the story going and to makes sure that the reader doesn't stop there. This is also usually the place where you introduce characters and how old they are or where they live. A good lead makes a good story.
MIDDLES- Stories that are one sided and very boring and no one wants to read them. The middle paragraph is where you can expand on what you are thinking. you don't want to bring it in to early or too late so this is why you do it in the middle.
END- The most common mistakes about endings is that it has to end with a bang. If you do, do that then you have to spend the whole story setting it up. One way that an ending can be written is to prove a point, so basically prove that you are right, But don't forget to b ring in both sides.
I’m not sure you have to do that. I think that as long as you hold the reader’s attention until you get to that information, it’s all right to bury it a little further down.
this really stuck with me because I believe that this is basically the whole point of a lead and if you have any questions this will answer it.
Burnett, the eldest at 17, walking up Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, and singing out Mohammed Ali rhymes into the chilly air.
In the lead paragraph it said that you should state who they are and where they live I believe that this is a perfect example of this.
“I’m going to push some dirt around here, I’ve dug lots of other holes in my life, but I’ve never done one like this.”
this stuck with me because it was very funny and I laughed out loud
So I suggest that if anyone should ever get an opportunity to see whatever his name was again in the buff, maybe they want to grab that chain and run with it.
love this because #sass #queen #lit this also made me laugh out loud
It’s a great ending, right? It’s a great ending.
this is basically how I feel about this assignment.
I HOPE YOU ENJOYED

Story quetsions

1. The significance of this story was to show how the bot lived his daily life and about how much the girl knew about him. Also how you can love at a young age. The story is told as if the little girl is telling it and she only talks about the little boy.
2. The main character the little boy is the main character but is never the narrative.  This all about what the girls thinks about him and his life so this might be different from if the boy was telling it because  he might have different opinions on what he does.
3.The writer includes all of her questions within the article to give contexts. She also makes it seem like she is a 10 year old girl who is in love with this boy. Or thats what I thought at first. She also followed him throughout the day as apposed to a lifetime or a longer period of time.
4. The writer most likely used a few sources such as school people, parents, friends and possible others that see him throughout the day. As I said earlier she included her questions within the story to give context.
5. She asked "who is the most important women in the world" he said "none I Don't know
"I have a lot of girlfriends", "but I don't remember their names    she probably asked something along the lines of what do you think about girls.

David Bowie

David Bowie was a great musician and influencer. He should be remembered by the way he moved people through his music and actions. His life was full of many up and downs that inspired people on the daily. He had a colorful lifestyle and was loved by many. He definitely left his mark on society with his quirky  personality and will be missed. RIP

I initially read David Bowie, then I read the articles about Glenn Frey and Alan Rickman. All of the stories started off with the base of what they are known for or their big accomplishments in life. And also how they died and what age. They would all then go on to explain in more detail how things accord in the order they happened.  It all was written in a sweet way with no negative comments.

Tell Readers A Good Story

1.  Hawthorne offers this premise for the chapter: "We're not collecting data. We want to tell stories." How does he suggest reporters go about realizing this objective?

Hawthorne is all about a good story and he states in his chapter that you will accomplish a good story by a following a certain curriculum to achieve the bets result. This process consist of many steps, the first one being that when you began a story you ask yourself "what is this story really about" all stories that are written have an overall theme.  This theme doesn't have to be a big message but just one sentence will do. Now you could say the theme of your story is soccer. But thats not a theme, it might be the start to the theme but not the whole theme. What about soccer really sticks out? That would be the theme. Going back to the first thing Hawthorne said "we're not collecting data. We want to tell stories" data is good for many things like a biography but not for a good story that catches readers attention. Any story has the potential to be great, it just depends on the way you present it.

2.  On page 41, Hawthorne says that you shouldn't write stories that are the metaphorical equivalent of microwave popcorn. For the rest of the chapter, he presents his recipe to cook up a much more delicious, satisfying story. What is his complete recipe for writing an excellent story?

Popcorn is ready to go in 90 seconds, but thats not how long you want the reader to look at your story before they get bored and move on to the next one. The recipe that Hawthorne has come up with will help the reader stay engaged and overall enjoy the piece. Literary Devices are always good to include in your story because it will entertain your reader throughout the story without boring them. The second ingredient to a great story is drama. All sorts of drama works it just all depends on the reader and the audience you're reaching out too. With drama come characters, each person has a unique story and you should try to include it in yours. Conflict can e found anywhere whether its kids fighting over a piece of candy or two countries fighting over land. Either way its always engages the reader and keeps them on the edge of their seat. You might be thinking, how do you produce conflict or drama in my story?  Well dialogue can help you create any type of situation within your story. It can create a tone or just a interesting topic. The next thing for wonderful story is something that can be found anywhere. Even the first sentence;Anticipation. This could be the first thing the reader sees which would encourage them to continue on and see what else your story has in-store. Somewhere in your story you need a climax which is the high point of the story, or in other word the main event. This is what the reader has been looking for the whole time. Most stories end in a cliff hanger, although the this can be interesting, this can also be frustrating to the reader. You try to at least almost solve the problem with a resolution. This would be the last ingredient that would complete the recipe to a fabulous story.
